McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum's 10th Anniversary Party

Join us on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 12 p.m. to celebrate our 10th Anniversary! There will be cake and cupcakes from Swedish Bakery, free museum admission, and fun activities for the whole family.

Kickapoo Volunteer Workday

Join us on the third Sunday of each month to work on gully fixing. A gully is an unnatural channel created by running water. Gullies facilitate stormwater erosion and allow sediment and contaminants to enter the river. Come on out and lend a hand!

77 Beats

The Old Town School of Folk Music is creating a musical travelogue entitled “77 Beats,” designed to celebrate all 77 of Chicago’s ethnically-diverse neighborhoods. In consultation with community leaders, “77 Beats” will present a series of performances representing the music and culture of each neighborhood, paired with other cultural elements such as cuisine, visual arts and traditions in unique and unexpected locations, throughout spring, summer and fall 2016.

From milkweed to goldenrod, Kickapoo's native prairie plants need your help! Be a part of river and forest revitalization by joining an inspiring movement of volunteers gathering to restore this special site along the  Little Calumet River. Learn what it takes to restore diverse wildlife, trees, wildflowers, and health in our forest preserves and our river system. Our goal is to grow a community of people who will become caretakers and stewards through on-going education and training.

LaBagh Woods Volunteer Workday

This uncommon woodland community encompasses wet savanna, degraded marsh, and mature floodplain woods, and is dominated by swamp white oaks. Plants such as swamp saxifrage, blue flag iris, and bluejoint grass are indicators the wetness of this site. In the more mesic woodland along the river bluff, one finds plants with such picturesqe names as zig-zag goldenrod, wild geranium, wood reed, bottlebrush grass and golden alexanders. Somme Woods East Volunteer Workday

Somme Woods East, the furthest east of the Sommes, has bur and white oak woodlands with massive old oaks, open marshes, and ephemeral ponds. Rich with native plants and animals, they are being restored to their original beauty. This site is part of the visionary Next Century Conservation Plan to ensure that thousands of acres of healthy woodlands, wetlands and prairies continue to exist and thrive in our forest preserves.
