Red FoxFlatwater Classic: Voyageur Challenge

A benefit to Flatwater Classic sponsors is the opportunity to participate in the Voyageur Challenge, the headline component of the race. Aboard replicas of 17th century fur trading “Voyageur” canoes, teams of 10 (nine corporate team members and one guvenale, or trained steersman) work together to maneuver their craft through the river’s twists and turns.

The victorious team wins the right to display the Flatwater Classic trophy at its place of business for one year.

The Voyageur Challenge is fun competition that brings out the best in each team. Friends provides each team with the 26-foot Voyageur canoe, paddles, life preservers, the guvenale, and instruction. Once at the finish line, all teams are treated to lunch and receive a t-shirt to commemorate their achievement.

What to Expect

Voyageur teams arrive at Clark Park by 9 a.m. to meet their guvenale, choose their gear, and begin to strategize their victory. After general instructions are given on land, teams carry their canoes to the launch for on-the-water training before the race begins. The whistle sounds at 10 a.m. and the teams are off, paddling hard to be the first to cross the finish line.

New in 2008

Each team member also has the opportunity to participate in the Flatwater Classic Paddle-a-thon; open to all racers whether they are Voyageur competitiors or individual paddlers.

The top individual fundraiser will enjoy a three day, two night kayaking and camping excursion along the beautiful Wisconsin River! Paddle the river, relax on sandbars, explore nearby bluffs, and observe the abundance of wildlife all before unwinding to hearty meals around a glowing campfire. This trip includes experienced guides, all kayaking and camping equipment, and all meals. Provided courtesy of The Northwest Passage.
