Join Friends of the Chicago River and the City of Evanston for Clean Up, Evanston as we clean up the river from canoes. It's a free canoe trip to help the river! We’ll meet at 9am at the Dammrich Rowing Center: 3220 Oakton St, Skokie, IL 60076.

Friends of the Chicago River canoe guides will meet you on-site and provide an orientation and paddling lesson for the day. All necessary equipment will be provided, including canoes, paddles, personal floatation devices, trash bags and gloves. Participants will sit two to a canoe, and we’ll collect trash as we paddle. We will paddle upstream towards Evanston, then turn around and return to where we started. The event will end at 11am. We suggest arriving 15 minutes early so that we can get started promptly at 9.

We will paddle rain or shine, but will cancel the canoe trip in the event of unsafe conditions such as storms or flooding. We recommend having some prior canoe experience so volunteers can spend the most time possible focusing on trash clean-up, but we welcome intrepid newcomers as well. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, including layers, rain-gear and sun protection if necessary.

Please wear shoes that strap onto your feet; no flip flops. We suggest bringing anything with you that will help make your trip more enjoyable, including drinking water. While we don’t expect to get wet during the trip, anything is possible! Please bring waterproofing materials for any electronic devices. A Ziploc bag is usually sufficient, though not fully waterproof. Ages 8 and up.
