July Resolution: Celebrate Bees and Butterflies

Our 12 River Resolutions for 2025 are designed to inspire actions and ideas that you can embrace to improve the health of the 156-mile Chicago-Calumet River system and its tributary streams for all people, water, and wildlife. The monthly advocacy steps are an invitation to engage and educate the public to get to know the river system as well as what they can do for it and why it matters for us all.

In July, think about pollinators; they need our help, and they help us. Pollinators sustain plant communities by pollinating native plants that provide wildlife food, nesting, and shelter. Pollinators include butterflies, moths, beetles, hummingbirds, bats, and flies. Native trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses in your garden and along our riverbanks prevent erosion, filter pollutants, and provide habitat for wildlife and at-risk animals including bees and butterflies. Also, native plants can absorb rain at up to nine times the rate of turf grass which is not a source of food or shelter.
