John Quail Honored with Dr. George B. Rabb Force of Nature Award
The Chicago Wilderness Alliance has recognized John Quail, director of policy and conservation at Friends of the Chicago River, with the Dr. George B. Rabb Force of Nature Award—a prestigious honor celebrating extraordinary leadership in advancing regional conservation and environmental protection.
For more than 25 years, John has been a driving force behind the river’s remarkable comeback. His vision, persistence, and dedication have transformed not only the Chicago-Calumet River system but also how the city views its waterways—as living ecosystems that connect people, wildlife, and communities.
“John’s expertise and dedication has changed what’s possible for the river system,” said Margaret Frisbie, executive director of Friends of the Chicago River. “This award is a well-deserved recognition of John’s unwavering commitment and vison for a restored and protected river that is clean, healthy, and accessible for all.”
John has led and influenced countless restoration projects—and his efforts have had a direct impact on the transformation the river from a neglected waterway into a thriving natural asset teeming with wildlife including nearly 80 species of fish, turtles, birds, beavers, muskrats—and people including the 265 joyful athletes who came from around the world for the first Chicago River Swim in almost 100 years a few weeks ago John’s career embodies the spirit of the Force of Nature Award—proof that sustained advocacy and collaboration can create lasting, systemic change for generations to come.
