Roll Up Your Sleeves for Volunteer Stewardship Days
In December, be part of volunteer-led stewardship workdays supported by Friends of the Chicago River at two Forest Preserves of Cook County: Whistler Woods and Forest Glen Woods. Whether you’re a long-time steward or a first-time volunteer, these workdays are a chance to build community, learn new skills, and make a lasting impact on our local ecosystems.
Whistler Woods Workday
Home to majestic oaks that have stood for up to 300 years, Whistler Woods is a living reminder of our region’s natural history. Yet these ancient giants face a modern challenge: invasive brush that blocks sunlight and prevents their acorns from sprouting.
- Saturday, December 20 from 9a.m. – 12 noon
- Learn more and register here for Whistler Woods.
Forest Glen Woods Volunteer Days
Nestled within the Lower North Branch Preserves, Forest Glen Woods is a vital stopover for migratory birds and a unique mosaic of woodland, savanna, and floodplain habitats. Volunteers here work alongside the North Branch Restoration Project community to remove invasive plants, spread native seed, and address erosion issues.
- Saturday, December 6 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Learn more and register here for Forest Glen Woods.
Across both sites, stewardship activities may include:
- Removing invasive brush and weeds
- Cutting and burning woody invasive plants
- Collecting and distributing native seed
- Using tools such as loppers, pruning shears, hand saws, shovels, and rakes
All tools, gloves, and training are provided. No experience needed—just enthusiasm and a willingness to get your hands dirty! Volunteers under 18 must attend with a parent/guardian or a chaperoned youth group.
