WGN News Takes Viewers Inside the Bridgehouse Museum

WGN News reporter Erin McElroy recently took viewers inside Friends’ McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum for a behind-the-scenes look at the history, engineering, and stories of the Chicago-Calumet River system housed within the historic bridgehouse of the DuSable Bridge at Michigan Avenue.

The feature highlights the museum’s unique exhibits and its remarkable gear room, where visitors can see the massive machinery that raises the bridge to allow boats to pass. As the only Chicago bridgehouse open to the public, the museum offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore Chicago’s relationship with the river system and gain a better understanding of its ongoing environmental transformation.

Over the past two decades, more than 400,000 people from Chicago, the region, and around the world have visited the museum including tour groups, architecture enthusiasts, environmental advocates, and curious travelers eager to experience a working bridgehouse and learn more about Friends’ mission to protect and restore the river system.

The Bridgehouse Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through October 25.
