The River at the Center of Design

Friends' Blue Green Corridor Vision.

Friends of the Chicago River recently provided a positive public comment to the Chicago Plan Commission about Foundry Park, a proposed development by JDL Development planned for the northern section of the former Lincoln Yards site on the North Branch of the Chicago River. The proposed development won approval by the Chicago Plan Commission on January 15.

Foundry Park presents a significant opportunity for Chicago to showcase world-class waterfront design rooted in ecological restoration. After reviewing the proposal with our planning team and the City’s River Ecology and Governance Task Force, which Friends co-facilitates, it is clear the project team has placed the river at the center of the design—treating it as a living river, not a decorative water feature. The plan elevates both recreational and natural assets, including river access and the potential for a beach.

From an approval perspective, the design thoughtfully advances the Chicago River Design Guidelines through naturally sloped riverbanks, terraced bioswales, other nature-based stormwater strategies, and improved trail connectivity.

As the project moves forward, Friends encourages all partners to fully realize these river-friendly concepts and help set a new standard for private development that restores habitat, protects wildlife, reconnects people to water, and strengthens Chicago’s resilience and livability.
