Explore History on the Water: African American Heritage Water Trail Paddle
Friends of the Chicago River and the Forest Preserves of Cook County invite residents of the Calumet region to experience the Calumet River in a unique and meaningful way during the African American Heritage Water Trail Paddle on Saturday, June 20. Space is limited and advance registration is required.
Designed especially for community members living near the Calumet River, this free guided canoe trip explores the powerful stories of African Americans who traveled the Underground Railroad, broke barriers as Tuskegee Airmen, and led efforts for civil rights and environmental justice. As participants paddle along the Calumet River, they will learn about the people whose courage, determination, and achievements helped shape both the region and the nation.
Two sessions will be offered at Kickapoo Woods in the Forest Preserves of Cook County: 10–11:30 a.m. and 12 noon–1:30 p.m. To accommodate as many participants as possible, some riders will paddle while others sit in the center of the canoe, with opportunities to rotate throughout the trip.
No experience necessary. Friends’ experienced canoe guides will provide all equipment, paddling instruction, safety information, and on-the-water guidance. The event begins and ends at the same location and takes place rain or shine.
The paddle is free thanks to the generous support of the Forest Preserves of Cook County, helping provide local residents with an opportunity to connect with the river in their own neighborhood.
